When E.F. Hutton Speaks . . .

29 Sep

Image result for husband listening attentively to jabbering wifeDo you remember the 1980’s TV commercial for E.F. Hutton? The tag line was, “When E.F. Hutton speaks, people listen.” In our daily married life, our attitude should be, “When my spouse speaks, I listen.”

Have you ever “tuned out” your spouse or said, “There he goes again,” or “She never listens to me”? While this is not uncommon, it can reveal a road block to greater intimacy in marriage and with God.

The spousal relationship between husband and wife mirrors the relationship we have with God. If we take God for granted, we will tend to take our spouse for granted. If we take our spouse for granted, we will tend to take God for granted.  This week’s Psalm gives us great advice for either scenario: “If today you hear His voice, harden not your heart.”

If you want to improve your relationship with God, start by listening more attentively to your spouse.

Devote your entire attention to the one you love. To improve listening, remember:

  • Maintain eye contact
  • Repeat back what you hear
  • Listening is different from waiting to talk
  • Turn off the phone or TV to avoid distraction

The foregoing is this week’s installment of the “Marriage Minute,” produced by the Marriage and Family Life Office of the Archdiocese, which attempts to view the Sunday readings through the lens of the Sacrament of Marriage.
